Most will never have a name, but they are no different from other animals we know. They need love and companionship but spend their lives in isolation. The rare touch from a human hand is likely to come with pain, callousness and death.
This is the ugly reality for animals used in experiments that we have the power to change.
The Humane Research Act & Testing Act (HRTA) is a ground-breaking bill developed by CAARE to enable the shift toward superior, animal-free research by establishing a federally funded center to fund and promote research without animals. It requires full disclosure of numbers of animals used, and a plan for the National Institutes of Health to steadily reduce those numbers.
For World Week for Animals in Laboratories, CAARE has set up a petition to the U.S. Congress to pass the HRTA into law. By signing, your letter will directly reach your representative in Congress. There is also an opportunity for our international supporters to sign and add their voices too.
The bill is the first of its kind and will set a precedent for the future of science to focus on human-relevant methods instead of abusing living animals as mere lab instruments.
The HRTA has received strong support from animal advocacy groups, scientists and doctors in academia and industry, along with the legendary Dr. Jane Goodall, DBE and UN Messenger of Peace who said,
“It was in 1985 that I first saw with my own eyes the cruel, inhumane, and sterile conditions in which thousands of sentient animals are kept for use in medical research … We now have the opportunity to support the continuing development of alternatives that can lead to the ending of the inhumane use of live animals for research and more effective treatment for a wide range of human health conditions.”
Our mandate must be to modernize biomedical research to utilize entirely humane and human relevant methods. It is inexcusable to use sentient beings in painful, deadly and flawed experiments, destroying their minds, bodies, and lives.
The Humane Research Act was developed to enable a future where animals are no longer forced to suffer. We need every compassionate voice - please add yours today!
Citizens for Alternatives to Animal Research (CAARE), is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization, established to highlight and promote research without animals.
Please donate to support CAARE’s mission to reduce animal suffering by disseminating information about the power and progress of research without animals.
