Join Jane Goodall to pass the Humane Research Act

History is in the making with the introduction of the Humane Research and Testing Act of 2020 (H.R. 8633). This bipartisan bill, introduced by Representatives Alcee Hastings (D-FL) and Vern Buchanan (R-FL), will enact the boldest steps ever to reduce the use of animals in experiments by establishing the National Center for Alternatives to Animals in Research and Testing (Center) under the National Institutes of Health (NIH).

This unprecedented Center would enable NIH to take key steps to effectively replace animal experimentation by developing, funding and incentivizing non-animal methods of research.

Now we need to work to make sure that the Humane Research and Testing Act of 2020 becomes law. To do that the bill needs broad support in the House of Representatives. Please help us advance H.R. 8633 by contacting your representative in the House to co-sponsor H.R. 8633.

CAARE worked for over a year to develop and promote this landmark legislation and we are pleased to have received several high-profile endorsements including from the extraordinary Dr. Jane Goodall, DBE, Founder of the Jane Goodall Institute and UN Messenger of Peace.

60 years ago, Dr. Goodall reinvented and inspired the field of animal behavior with her groundbreaking peaceful observations of chimpanzees in the wild. She understands the power of this pending legislation to change the course of unbridled animal experimentation in the U.S. and now she has joined with CAARE to support the bill.

“It was in 1985 that I first saw with my own eyes the cruel, inhumane, and sterile conditions in which thousands of sentient animals are kept for use in medical research,” says Dr. Goodall.  “On moral and ethical grounds, I found this shocking and unacceptable.”

“Since then it has been shown that a great deal of this research based on animal models is often useless or even counterproductive for treating human patients. At the same time, the development of alternatives to the use of animals has become ever more sophisticated and is often safer and more effective.”

Dr. Goodall emphasizes, “We now have the opportunity to support the continuing development of these alternatives that can lead to the ending of the inhumane use of live animals for research and more effective treatment for a wide range of human health conditions.”

“Much animal research takes place because scientists don’t have the knowledge or support to pursue other methods. The new NIH center proposed by Representatives Hastings and Buchanan would overhaul the current paradigm of widespread, repetitive, and unnecessary animal experiments in a way that nothing has before.”

The Humane Research and Testing Act of 2020 H.R. 8633 will be a game changer for animals in labs. Please help us pass the Humane Research and Testing Act of 2020 into law by contacting your representative today to co-sponsor H.R. 8633.

Citizens for Alternatives to Animal Research (CAARE), is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization, established to highlight and promote research without animals.
