Most will never have a name, but they are no different from other animals we know. They need love and companionship but spend their lives in isolation. The rare touch from a human hand is likely to come with pain, callousness and death.
This is the ugly reality for animals used in experiments that we have the power to change.
This World Week for Animals in Labs we are asking everyone to contact their legislators in Congress to support The FDA Modernization Act of 2021 (H.R. 2565 and S. 2952), that would end the U.S Food and Drug Agency’s mandate requiring that animal tests be done before a potential drug enters human clinical trials.
If passed, the bill will allow those companies that are using cutting-edge, non-animal methods like computer modeling, organs-on-chips, organoids and more, to submit their drugs for FDA approval without animal testing.
The FDA Modernization Act is advancing with robust bipartisan support and was reviewed at a hearing by the House Energy and Commerce Health Subcommittee in March.
The bill shows promise to pass this legislative session. But we can’t let up now.
Please contact your federal legislators in Congress during WWAIL to support the bill.
Science has advanced immensely in the nearly 80 years since animal testing was first required by the FDA in 1938, and there are now countless innovative human-relevant technologies that can be used to test the safety and efficacy of drugs more accurately than animal tests.
Drugs deemed safe and effective in animals have a failure rate of over 90% in human clinical trials, and it is illogical for the FDA to continue to require them.
In addition to being inaccurate and inhumane, animal testing causes unnecessary delays and exorbitant costs. The average drug costs upwards of $1 billion and takes approximately 10 years to make it to market.
Allowing scientists to use more accurate human-based methods will spare intense suffering for many thousands of dogs, monkeys, mice, rabbits and other animals, while enhancing safety and lowering the costs of drug treatments that are urgently needed.
Passing the FDA Modernization Act will be a monumental change to an archaic law mandating animal testing when we have the technology to replace animals.
Thank you so much for taking action to end cruel drug testing on animals.
