Neuralink must be shut down

Elon Musk’s medical device company, Neuralink, has once again come under fire for apparent egregious animal-welfare violations. Earlier this year, the company was exposed by the Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine for botched procedures on monkeys that led to prolonged agony and death. Now Neuralink staff members have alerted the press that animals again needlessly suffered and died because animal testing is being rushed.

Swimming for their lives

The forced swim test is an abhorrent experiment that uses animals to study depression in humans. The test has been duly criticized as being exceptionally cruel and of limited applicability to human depression. It involves trapping mice and rats in inescapable cylinders of water and observing them while they struggle to stay afloat, with the dubious assumption that those who “give up” are depressed.

The House must vote on the FDA Modernization Act

In an amazing achievement last month, the U.S. Senate unanimously passed the FDA Modernization Act 2.0 (S.5002) to end the FDA’s mandate for animal testing of all new drugs.

Now we must work to get this landmark bill to the House floor for a vote before the end of the year. The bill previously passed in the House (H.R. 2565) but must be voted on again in the House to reconcile it with the bill passed by the Senate.
